Take advantage of free cultural tours of Murcia
We are spoiled for choice when it comes to activities and things to do on the Costa Blanca and Costa Calida. Beautiful blue flag beaches, colourful fiestas and an endless supply of reasonably priced restaurants – we are never stuck for things to do or places to go.
The local authorities in Murcia have added to our ‘things to do’ list by launching a series of free guided tours of the area. Not only are the tours free, but they cover some of the best local highlights such as the historic centre, the railway and the castle. The tours, which can be booked online here, average at about an hour and a half each and are bound to be interesting and educational…did we mention they are free?!
Tours run in May, June and July with more planned for later in the year. Some of the tours are in English and some are offered in Spanish (the website specifies for each tour) but often, the Spanish tours are very easy to follow and the guides do have a bit of English. Even if they don’t, it could be good practice for the local lingo skills and at least you’ll have the chance to go somewhere different and meet some new people. You might even have time for a nice cool caña and a plate of tapas at the end of the tour.
In total there are 27 places covered by the various tours so you’ll have the opportunity to learn a lot about the area. The organisers themselves had this to say: “We suggest you go through different localities’ historic districts, enjoy lots of natural settings, discover our region’s relationship with water, relax at several health establishments, get excited with stories and legends belonging to our villages’ local memory… All of them are special opportunities for you to get to know and love the Region of Murcia.”
