It’s time for the May Fair
Living on the Costa Blanca, we are never far away from a fiesta and at the end of this month, it will be time for one of our favourites – the May Fair, or Feria de Sevillianas, in Torrevieja.
For almost a week, the port area is transformed into a hub of food, dancing and horsemanship while residents and tourists alike take time out to soak up the atmosphere and enjoy a snapshot of local culture.
The traditional green and white striped ‘casetas’ each house a bar (usually hosted by a local restaurant or association), offering food, drinks (or both) and most have a little dance floor where you can try your hand at traditional Sevillianas dancing.
This year (2019), the May Fair takes place from May 29th until June 2nd (delayed a couple of weeks from its originally announced dates due to an issue formalising the contracts for the event at the town hall).
Throughout the week at certain times there will be performances on the main stage of music and dancing by various singers, bands and dance groups but the casetas themselves are usually open for business from early morning until 4 or 5am! There is food on offer at most, if not all, casetas but be warned that if you don’t see any prices on display, it could work out an expensive lunch! Our advice is to head for the casetas run by the charity associations as their prices for a caña and a tapa are generally more reasonable.
So whether you live here or are just visiting, don’t forget to pencil the May Fair dates into your diary.
